TEEN INTERVENE:
NEW SUBSTANCE USE PREVENTION PROGRAM
FOR ADOLESCENTS 12-19
What is Teen Intervene?
It is a 3-4 session program for teens 12-19 to address their substance use by providing education, support and motivation to reduce use. This model reflects the belief to effectively engage youth it is important to meet teens where they are, recognizing a teen may or may not see their use as a problem or see a need to change their behavior. Teen Intervene draws from various models proven effective in addressing substance use; including motivational interviewing, stages of change theory, and cognitive-behavioral therapy.
What happens in Teen Intervene?
There is an introductory session to explain the program, its goals, and provide a brief screening to rule out an addiction disorder (which would warrant a referral to treatment). Follow up sessions provide education tailored to individual needs. A session with parents may be included. (Total 3-4 sessions)
Who conducts Teen Intervene Sessions?
Prevention Specialists trained in the Teen Intervene Model and working for NYS Office of Addiction Services and Supports, (OASAS) funded agencies.
How is a teen's privacy and confidentiality protected?
Only a teen's program attendance is shared with the referring person, unless the teen consents to share information with others.
Are parents involved?
A session for parents/guardians, and the teen together is a standard part of the program but may not always be possible.
Where does Teen Intervene take place?
The program is being offered virtually but may be in-person in the future.
