After Roe v. Wade
The U.S. Supreme Court’s June 24 decision overturning Roe v. Wade was a great victory for the pro-life movement and an answer to the prayers and hard work of those committed to the pro-life cause during a journey of nearly half a century.
Our voices have been heard, and we’re overwhelmed with joy.
The decision—which found there is no constitutional right to abortion and left it to individual states to regulate the practice, or ban it altogether—was a momentous event.
We join all who are offering prayers of thanksgiving for the countless innocent lives that will be saved.
Along with the bishops of New York State, we also acknowledge the wide range of emotions associated with the decision, officially Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, and we recognize that it’s a judicial victory, not a cultural one.
The culture remains deeply divided on the issue of abortion access, and it’s clear that the pro-life movement’s work is not over. There is still a lot to be done in helping support women across the country who may feel uneasy and troubled by the high court’s ruling.
While we rejoice in the Dobbs decision, then, we understand that this is not a time to celebrate.
Indeed, the reversal of Roe will not immediately change anything here in New York, where our state laws guarantee continued access to abortion as before. In fact, the numbers will likely rise in the aftermath of the Dobbs decision as women from states with limited or no access will travel here for abortions—as they will to other states with few or no restrictions.
There is much that needs to be done to change the culture and build a culture of life, including the enactment of family-friendly policies that welcome children, support mothers, cherish families and empower them to thrive.
Fortunately, we’ve had successful models here like Good Counsel Homes and other mother and child missions such as those organized by the Sisters of Life. But these and similar efforts must be multiplied many times over just in New York alone.
Most importantly, it’s now time to step back from confrontation and allow the love that’s at the foundation of the pro-life witness be first thing that people encounter.
“[June 24] is a day to ask for God’s help in winning minds and hearts to understand and to accept the precious gift of life from the moment of conception onward and to create the kind of conditions in society where no mother feels she has to choose between her future and the life of her child,” said Archbishop William E. Lori of Baltimore, chairman of the U.S. bishops’ Committee on Pro-Life Activities, in remarks after the court’s announcement.
He called on the Church and society to redouble their efforts to help women in difficult or unplanned pregnancies, noting the bishops’ 2020 initiative called “Walking With Moms in Need” which aims to engage parishes to do exactly that.
So, yes, the road ahead will likely not be smooth and some may become discouraged.
But we can and must continue making the case for life even when it’s a lonely exercise. We’ve achieved a critically important goal in building a culture of life. The journey continues, along with our prayers.
The Editorial, June 30, 2022 “Catholic New York”
Having a Mass said for a loved one at Resurrection Church is a noble and ideal way to honor a deceased person. There is a beautiful tradition in the Catholic Church of offering Mass for the soul of a family member or friend. The name of the deceased is announced by the priest and published in our Sunday bulletin.
The 2023 Mass Intentions Book at Resurrection IS OPEN. There will be a limit of seven masses per family and two names per Mass.
The weekday Mass offering is $20.00 per Mass and the weekend Masses offering is $25.00 per Mass.
We will be using a new online system that will allow you to view and select available Mass times and make the offering payment by credit card.

PREP Registration for 2022/23 IS OPEN
Please see our website www.ryeprep.org for more information on class days/times and fee schedules. Places in each class are limited and are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Those who complete the registration process first will have the widest choice of days and times.
Our volunteer catechists and co-catechists are the heart and soul of our program. Please consider sharing your faith with the youth of our Parish. Tuition discounts apply.
In addition, if you are aware of parishioners that have children entering Grade 1 next year and who currently do not have children attending the PREP program, please let them know that registration will be opening next week.
HOLY WATER
A beautiful custom in the Catholic Church is dipping your hand in one of the holy water fonts and making the sign of the cross in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit amen-as you enter the church or leave the church.
We encourage all people, young and old, to start using the holy water fonts again.
Also, it is a great teaching tool for parents to teach the children to make the sign of the cross and remind them of the life-giving waters of their baptism.
CARDINALS APPEAL 2022
We are grateful to our generous parishioners for their participation in the annual Cardinals appeal in our parish for the benefit of the Archdiocese.
We had the annual In-pew second collection last Sunday. It was successful as 129 parishioners make a gift to this life-giving appeal and we reached and surpassed our goal!
Thank you to all of the donors who made the Cardinals appeal in our parish a huge success.

FALL IS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER AND THE MUSIC MINISTRY NEEDS YOU!
Before covid hit us in 2019 the RES music ministry had 12 in the adult choir and 32 in the children's choir. Unfortunately, as with many things, Covid has really affected our membership and we only had 4 people in the adult choir and 7 in the children's choir this year. I want to thank each of those choir members for their continued support. The GOOD NEWS is that we now have PLENTY of room FOR YOU to join our groups in the fall!
I am looking for singers of all ages. We especially need men, both Tenors, and Basses. Don't sing? Well don't worry, I am looking for instrumentalists too! Does someone in your family play the violin, flute, guitar, oboe, drums, or Clarinet? We have a place for them too!
There is a possibility if we get the interest and commitment from enough who are interested, that we may be starting an adult handbell choir as well! What's that? You don't know what a handbell choir is? Stay tuned for more information on the possibility of this fun and exciting group!
Over the next few months, please take the time to think and pray about how you can share your time and talent with the music ministry this fall!

Come develop your basketball skills at camp this summer! All participants will learn the fundamentals of the game, skill development, and character development in a fun and exciting way!
The camp will include coaching by Marty Durkin, stations for each age group focusing on basketball-specific skills, and competitions where participants can practice these skills in an enjoyable and exhilarating fashion!
$320.00 for the week, two siblings will be $600.00.

Jesus sent forth seventy-two disciples to preach his good news, telling them "the harvest is rich, but the workers few." He also gave them detailed instructions on how to act towards the people. Jesus then reminded them not to be happy because of their power over evil, but to rejoice in the salvation they would achieve.
CATECHISTS NEEDED FOR CLASSES FOR 2022-23
The Parish Religious Education Program is looking for catechists for the upcoming 2022-2023 school year. Being a catechist is a rewarding faith enriching experience. Please consider joining our team! Opening Your Heart explores the fundamental questions of our Catholic faith and our relationship with Jesus Christ. We'll dig into topics like prayer, reading the Bible, the role of the Holy Spirit in our lives, and what we're supposed to do with suffering that feels senseless. As we're wrestling with our questions through the study, we'll be challenged to open our hearts to the only One who can bring the healing and transformation we so desire.
Classes will begin in the fall on either Tuesday mornings or Wednesday evenings.
